John Garvic is the founder of Garvic & Associates and leads the firm's litigation and corporate transactions practice groups. He has represented individuals and businesses in California since 1977. Focusing his practice on complex civil litigation, homeowner association and common interest development law, real estate and construction defect litigation, and insurance bad faith litigation, Mr. Garvic represents clients at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal court.
Mr. Garvic is recognized as one of the foremost specialists in homeowner association and common interest development law in California. He advises and counsels both homeowners and homeowner associations on day-to-day legal issues, as well as litigation on their behalf. He has represented hundreds of homeowners and homeowner associations in matters involving all facets of homeowner association law, including construction defect issues and litigation, insurance coverage and claims litigation, document amendments and interpretation, document and rules enforcement, architectural control, association financial obligations and third-party contracts, including construction contracts for repairs and remodeling.
Education
Mr. Garvic received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the Ohio State University. He received his J.D., with honors, from the National Law Center at George Washington University.
Prior to entering private practice in 1977 and forming Garvic & Associates, Mr. Garvic practiced patent law for IBM Corporation before serving as the Deputy District Attorney in charge of the Consumer Fraud and White Collar Crimes Unit of the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.
Professional Activities and Affiliations
Mr. Garvic has donated countless hours of his time to the education of homeowner association directors and others in various aspects of homeowner association law. Much of this work has been done through his involvement with the Executive Council of Homeowners (ECHO), where he has served on the board of directors since 1976, longer than any other member, serving as its president on four occasions. He also serves ECHO as a member of its Legal Resource Panel and as a chairperson of its Legislative Committee. In addition to his involvement with ECHO, Mr. Garvic is a member and past president of the San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association, as well as a member of the San Mateo County Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the Community Associations Institute (CAI).
Mr. Garvic is a frequent lecturer on homeowner association issues to professional groups including ECHO, CAI and other similar organizations. He was also an approved lecturer of the California Association of Community Managers (CACM), where he has lectured in their certification program.
Mr. Garvic has authored numerous articles on topics relevant to homeowner associations for various industry publications, such as the ECHO Journal.
Admissions
Mr. Garvic is a member of the State Bars of California and Virginia. He is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
